Richmond 48 Hour Film Project: Team Hand Turkey Studios
We finished!!!! Check out our completed animated short, Oversaturated, on Vimeo or YouTube or directly download the MP4.
This is the collaborative work wiki for the Hand Turkey Studios 48 Hour Film Project Team. It's publicly viewable to anyone who wants to follow along as we put together this little animated short. That's right. Animated. The Richmond 48 Hour Film Project takes place July 17th-19th, 2009 and our intention is create a 4-7 minute (probably/hopefully closer to 4-minute) animated short movie for this project. We actually attempted this feat last year and missed the deadline due to an array of technical issues. If you're interested in find out more about that particular project, there's a video of a presentation on this project that was given at the 2008 Blender Conference about it. That's right, we're working in Blender for this project; for modeling, rigging, and animation. We're also using some other Free Software tools such as GIMP, Inkscape, Ardour, and Subversion to get this project completed. Of course, we'll need to use a few "closed source" programs as well, but we're trying to minimize that as much as possible. :P
Although we missed the deadline last year, we're incredbily fortunate that the entire team from that project has licked their wounds and returned for for more this year. In fact, our team grew by 5 people! We have some awesomely talented people signed on here and we're amped to take the 48 Hour Film Project by storm (or fail as interestingly as possible... but we don't think we'll fail. In fact, we might just rule). While the core of the team will be working from Richmond, VA, over half of the team is actually located elsewhere throughout the world. The bulk of this project is managed online with a handful of helpful internet technologies... some of which have been around for decades.
In fact, this wiki is your gateway to experiencing the process as a spectator. As we work our way through the production of this short, this wiki is our central collaborative tool. As designs, storyboards, the script, etc get knocked out, they'll be posted here. You can follow along by looking at our Recent changes page and seeing what pages in the wiki get updated or added. That page also has an RSS feed coming from it, so you can also use that if you use an RSS feed reader. Other than this wiki, we are also using Subversion as our version control system for the animation, IRC for realtime chat communication, an email discussion list for pre-project communication/brainstorming, and we've created a Twitter account where you can follow our updates as we work. If we have the time/bandwidth, we'll also try to live-stream some webcam footage, too.
So here's the short list of ways to follow along this project:
- This wiki - http://projects.handturkeystudios.com/rva48h
- IRC - We're on freenode.net in the channel #ht48hfp. Use your preferred IRC client (mIRC, Chatzilla, Pidgin, etc.) or you can use freenode's web interface.
- Twitter - Follow us at http://www.twitter.com/handturkey48
- TinyChat - Throughout the weekend we will be broadcasting live video feeds from Turkey Central as well as from webcams of the international team. http://tinychat.com/ht48hfp
That's pretty much it. Wish us luck. Donations in the form of coffee and donuts would be appreciated! ;)
